Akshaya Tritiya at ISKCON NAIROBI

The Day of Everlasting Success

Akshaya Tritiya is considered one of the most auspicious days in the Vedic calendar. The word "Akshaya" means "that which never diminishes." Any spiritual activity, charity, or service performed on this day is believed to yield permanent, everlasting benefits.

At ISKCON Nairobi, this day marks the beginning of the Chandan Yatra. To provide relief from the scorching summer heat, the Deities of Sri Sri Radha Bankebihari and Lord Jagannath are smeared with cooling sandalwood paste (Chandan). This festival lasts for 21 days, during which the Lord is decorated in various transcendental forms made entirely of sandalwood.

It was also on this day that Lord Krishna provided the "Akshaya Patra" to Draupadi, a vessel that would never run out of food, and that the holy river Ganges descended to the Earth. It is an ideal day for starting new ventures and making offerings of gold, grain, or service.
